Investigating Abortion
This topic is so highly emotive that I found it almost impossible to find an image for this page (the one above is a 'cop-out', but it does at least suggest that women should be able to make their own choices one way or another). If you are writing about abortion, you will need to work very hard to keep your own opinion out of the picture and make sure your interview and survey questions are not at all biased (go through everything with Ms Carmyn first - writing this is making her good at being unbiased!). You will also have to consciously search for people with different opinions, as people in your local community will mostly have a single view.
The following sites will give you an idea of some of the arguments involved:
debates.org [http://www.debate.org/search?q=abortion] these are online debates - both sides will be very biased!
The Guardian [http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/ng-interactive/2014/oct/01/-sp-abortion-rights-around-world-interactive?CMP=fb_gu] compares abortion rights around the world, allowing you to put Australian laws into context.
ABC Compass [http://www.abc.net.au/compass/explore/ethics.htm] has a page of links to organisations around the world.
Definitions:
Before you start you will need to define abortion - In Australian this means looking at legal definitions and what happens at different stages of pregnancy.
Children by choice [http://www.childrenbychoice.org.au/info-a-resources/facts-and-figures/australian-abortion-law-and-practice] is a prochoice counselling service which outlines the laws in different states
Better Health Channel [http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Abortion_in_Australia] provides similar information. including statistics (but it doean't say where they came from)
Family Planning NSW [http://www.fpnsw.org.au/LAW%20ON%20ABORTION%20IN%20NSW.pdf] has a factsheet on local laws.
Reasons for abortion:
then you will need to look at the reasons women choose to have abortions -
ABC Compass [http://www.abc.net.au/compass/s1568343.htm]
The Age [http://www.theage.com.au/news/opinion/lateterm-abortions-women-need-more-help/2005/10/17/1129401194006.html
Family Planning Queensland [http://www.fpq.com.au/pdf/Teen_pregnancy_indicator.pdf] gives statistics associated with teen pregnancy
Reasons why people are against abortion
We are very lucky in australia because we live in a country where abortion is legal, family planning clinics are supported by the government and where human rights are respected by protest groups. In the US (for example) people have committed crimes (including murder of doctors and blowing up clinics) as a protest against what they see as the "murder" of unborn children! almost all the sites in this category are highly biased and emotive.
Newsweekly [http://newsweekly.com.au/article.php?id=2302] comes from a pro-life perspective with some rational suggestions for change.
Save the Unborn [http://abortsa.com/abortion-statistics/] South Australia is the only state which collects stastistics. Followthe stistics here, though to see if they are legitimate.
