Yr 11 Business Studies - Media File Assessment
This assessment task is testing three things:
1. whether you understand the business cycle (of course you can - you just did it in class!)
2. whether you can use this information to explain where a local business is in the business cycle (easy - look at one of the businesses and see where it fits into what you learned in class)
3. whether you can use this information to explain why the business is making particular decisions (the thinking bit: find media articles that include solutions to at least four different problems and analyse the pros and cons)
FIRST - Revise the business cycle from your notes. You can't begin this assignment if you don't know it well! These notes [http://www.boredofstudies.org/download.php?id=2208] might help you revise.
NEXT - Use the databases from Auburn library or the links below (look under the scaffold outline -scroll all the way down!) to learn about one of the businesses listed on your assignment. Answer the questions in your assignment sheet about EACH of the articles you choose.
Look for problems such as: increased competition, changing marketplace,
Look for strategies such as: creating new products, diversification, downsizing, off-shore production, redundancies (job cuts), subsidies, sale of shares etc.
Sorry but Qantas was the only company I had time to research. If you want to do another company make sure you use words like "market share" or "business decline" or "redundancy" or "off shore production" in your Google search. Have a good look at the Qantas links anyway to help you work out what kinds or news to look for.
THEN - Use the following scaffold to help you organise your ideas for the in-class essay. It has two columns, one for information from class notes and one for information from the media file. The first past of your essay will be nearly all from the class notes and the second part will be mostly from the media file.
LASTLY - Use the scaffold to help you write your essay. 1500 words is about 10 paragraphs with 150 words per paragraph. If you look at the points for each paragraph I'm sure you'll have no trouble writing this many words.
Good luck in your test!

Sorry everyone - the computer is not cooperating: don't try to download the file. This is the part of the document I tried to upload. Try cut and pasting the points and making two columns called "from my notes" and "from my media files".

It is good for analysing the "cons" to the strategy of redundancies. I'm not 100% certain this is relevant to this essay. Use the ideas in a short way in your essay but don't include it in your media file.
