Animal Medicine Australia [http://animalmedicinesaustralia.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/AMA_Pet-Ownership-in-Australia-2016-Report_sml.pdf] run a survey of pet owners each year. They use the ABS statistics to adjust their data so it should be pretty accurate. there's a very good overview on page 2 - cut and paste it into a Word doc it you find it hard to read over the background image.
Saving Pets.com [http://savingpets.com.au/blog/pet-ownership-in-australia-2016-how-do-we-keep-our-pets] looks at the statistics from a rescue perspective, including noting laws that might affect pet owners.
