Rwandan Genocide (History Today, 2009/2019)
The Origins of Violence in Rwanda (2019) evaluates the links between a national political prescene, citizen compliance with state madates and vilence during the conflict.
Economic consequences
- Economic Genocide in Rwanda (1996) outlines the economic impact of Belgian colonisation and the way this contributed to the conflict. You'll need to log into JSTOR to access the article - you can do this trough your local library or create a free account.
- The Economic Effects of Genocide (2019) has loads of economic statistics, so it would be a good source if you have some background in economics. However, you'll need to speak to your local library about access. It may be available at the National Library through Trove.
Political consequences of economic recovery
- Rwanda's economic growth has given its strong state even more power (2019) considers how the rapid economic growth since the conflict has reinforced inequities and oppression.
- The Long-Term Effects of the Rwandan Genocide on Child Work (using 2010 statistics) relates the intensity of violence to the likely hood of child labour in an area. If you're doing an economic history of Rwanda, this is probably an important consideration - how much of the miracle growth is dependent of effective slave labour? How much of the new wealth is trickling down to those who need it most?
