Single Parent Families
Until Prime Minister Gough Whitlam brought in the Single Parent Pension in 1972, there was no support for single mothers at all - they relied on the kindness of freinds and families to support their children or they (more often) gave up their children for adoption.
It is only recently that there is no stigma of being from a 'broken home' or having an unmarried parent.
The SBS Insight episode, Solo Parents, [https://www.sbs.com.au/news/insight/tvepisode/solo-parents] looks at why some women are choosing to be single parents (as opposed to ending up that way after a failed relationship).
