Religion and politics
Christianity is used in all kinds of ways in American politics. Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry gives an overview of what Jesus said about church and state.

If you are researching why some Christians have so many rules and regulations about the way people should live their lives, you need to look at Evangelical and Pentecostal branches of Christianity.
What is an evangelical Christian? Evangelicals are Christians who believe that one must have a personal relationship with Jesus/God and that the bible is God's literal word. Because they believe that there is only one way to get to heaven, their commitment to their faith usually involves converting other people (so they don't end up in hell). Many evangelical groups mix missionary work with social activism, especially health and education services. If you ever took part in the 40 hour famine for World vision, you have helped raise money for an evangelical initiative.
Pentecostal churches have similar beliefs, but usually take a more individualistic rather than social activist lifestyle. Their relationship with God is close and emotional and they believe that God gives 'spiritual gifts' such as prophecy, healing and speaking in tongues (as holy language that does not have to be learned).
